The Show

Sky Metal is an outdoor concert - this was the last year it was held in the parking lot
adjacent to the casino. Metal bleachers were roughly 100 yards away from the stage. The
opening act was a local Acoma indian metal band (not very good); next up were the Texas
Hillbilly Coalition (bad - bad - bad). Jani Lane was next up (then Ratt, then lastly
Queensryche). Didn't recognize a single person in Jani's band. Jani was GREAT - this was
only a short while after a DUI arrest, and I expected him to slur words and stumble on
stage, but he was on his "A" game today! A greatest hits set of Warrant tunes, but a
really great, if short, performance. Weirdly enough, after the Ratt set we went inside
to the restaurant to eat dinner - being outside in the blazing hot sun from 1PM all the
way to after 9PM was enough - as I walked by the bathrooms I see Jani walking towards me
down the corridor, with an expression on his face that he wanted to blend into the
wallpaper - I was tempted to get his autograph and congratulate him on a really good
performance, but I left him alone. I thought it was weird for a "rock star" to look
so unhappy and out of place instead of strutting like a peacock. The recording's
higher frequencies suffered a little thanks to it being pretty windy outside - the
speakers hanging from the stage were swinging back & forth, and 100+ yards of concrete
between the speakers and the bleachers didn't help.
